RE: Sametime and Lotus Domino ~Chloe Fezreplop 28.Feb.03 07:00 PM a Web browser Sametime Server All ReleasesWindows NT/2000
I'll post some thoughts here and encourage others to do the same.
I'm not sure why they'd be interested in my number of users and servers. That shouldn't matter. They need to move the product forward.
I think Lotus is already aware that they need to abandon Microsoft's JVM. It's already been abandoned by Microsoft and is not even installed by default in WindowsXP. Lotus Sametime appears to be frozen at JDK 1.1.8.
There have been many advances in the Java language since 1.1.8. I can only guess at how much unnecessary code the developers at Lotus have created. Much of it is probably already in 1.4.x, or at least made easier to create.
I think the biggest concern today is getting Lotus Sametime working on Domino 6 servers. We can all agree on that. There are some companies who will not upgrade anything to Domino 6 until Sametime supports it.
I'd suggest releasing 3.1 as a patch for Domino R5 servers. Don't worry about new features. You're wasting time programming in 1.1.8. At this point freeze the product and move on. Go ahead and start building Sametime 3.5. It's best new feature? The requirement of Domino 6 servers and Sun's JVM on the browser. I'd like to see Sametime Meetings work in MSIE, Netscape, and Opera. The installed Sametime Connect client (not the applet version) must work on Windows and Mac OSX. At the very least, the applet version should run on Linux.
Ideally Lotus Sametime servers would install their own JDK. Lotus could then upgrade to the latest&greatest at any time. I'm sure their Java developers would love that, as well as Sametime Toolkit users. I think Domino 6.0 servers will forever use 1.3.
Products like QuickPlace are starting to integrate Sametime. It would be very unfortunate if these products slow the pace of Sametime product.
If you want to maintain market share, you must move on. Locking everyone to MSIE on Windows with Microsoft's JVM is a dead end.
